News from Sra. Santillán
Hello Roguewood Elementary Families,
Welcome back to another exciting school year at Roguewood Elementary! I hope your summer was filled with rest and joy and that you also made some great memories along the way.
Our staff has been hard at work preparing classrooms with our new furniture to create a safe, welcoming environment for every student. We are eager to see familiar faces and meet new friends as we begin another year of learning, growth, and community.
At Roguewood, we believe every child can achieve great things, and we look forward to partnering with you to make this year a memorable one. Together, we’ll encourage curiosity, celebrate progress, and build a strong sense of belonging for all.
We will have some new staff joining us this year. You can read all about it in the linked document. We will have 4 new teachers at Roguewood, a new librarian, a new special education paraprofessional and a Behavior Coach. This is SO exciting. Justin Eckert, a Roguewood mom and Roguewood paraprofessional in years past, will be joining us as the Administrative Assistant in the office. Read all about these staff members in the attached document and make sure that you give them a Roguewood welcome when you see them.
The links below contain lots of information for the upcoming weeks as we begin our school year.
You will be hearing from your classroom teachers today and learning all about Open House. We are so excited to see you in our building!
Enjoy your weekend!
Best Regards,
Amie Santillán
Principal, Roguewood Elementary

Breakfast and Lunch Information
The state budget that funds Michigan Meals is not yet finalized. We are hopeful that we will know the funding status of this program by October 1st.
RPS will be providing free breakfast and lunch through September 30th, but there is uncertainty about whether free meals will continue after this date.
Students who do not qualify for free or reduced meals may be charged for breakfast and lunch starting on October 1 if the Michigan Meals budget is not approved. Because of this, we strongly encourage all parents/guardians to fill out and return the Free and Reduced Lunch application. Completing this form takes less than 5 minutes and can help students receive important resources.
EVERY FORM COUNTS! It's more than the form...
Every application that is not submitted means lost educational programs and resources for our students. Filling out the form may help provide:
- Health & Wellness Services
- Before and After School Academic & Enrichment Programs
- Guidance & College Counselors
- Fee Waivers for College Applications & Admissions Tests
- Resources for Classrooms, Teachers & Children
You can find more information about the Free and Reduced lunch form by clicking the link below.
Transportation and busing
Transportation sent out messages through Family Access about how to sign up for busing. If you missed the August 8 deadline, please call the transportation office at 616-863-6328 or e-mail the director of transportation, Matt Puett, at mpuett@rockfordschools.org. Transportation is more than happy to help your child(ren) get assigned to their bus.
Transportation is hoping to have bus routes finalized by Friday, August 22. Because of this, please reach out to them by Thursday, August 21, to get your child(ren) assigned a bus.
Transportation is also encouraging RPS families to get the My Ride app on their phones. For more information on this, please click on the RPS Transportation link below.
Student Verification
All verification and acknowledgment will take place in FAMILY ACCESS starting August 7th. You can find a link to RPS Family Access on our district website. The process is similar to last year; however, the materials have been updated to support student learning for the 2025-2026 school year.
The steps for completing the verification process for your child are as follows:
Log into Family Access.
Click on the "Go to Information Verification for your son/daughter."
Please complete the steps in order, as listed on the right-hand side of your screen. (Note that fields in grey can only be edited at the school building with proper documentation.) Please select the appropriate drop-down items for each screen. Each step requires you to select "I have completed this step" at the bottom of the screen to finalize your information.
When completing the School Participation step, click on the link called "School Participation", click "yes" on the pop-up window to complete this step. Enter the proper information and click "Save" in the upper right-hand corner.
Once all steps have been completed, the final step allows you to submit the information. (THIS IS KEY TO FINALIZING VERIFICATION.) Once finalized, you will receive an email verification of enrollment. If you do not receive an email, please go back into FAMILY ACCESS to review any missing steps/information.
Note: We highly encourage all families to set up a FA account as it is the district’s main source of communication to parents. Please visit our website at www.rockfordschools.org & click on the Family Access link (upper right-hand side) or please feel free to contact the main office of student’s school for additional assistance.
School Nurse Update - Student Health
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome (almost) to a new school year! We hope you have had a wonderful summer. As the District Nurses, our priority is to support your child’s health and safety at school so they can learn and thrive.
If your child(ren) has a medical condition—such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, seizures, or any other health need—please update the school with:
Current medical information and emergency contacts
Updated Medication Authorization Form
Necessary medications or supplies for use during the school day
These items help us respond quickly and appropriately to your child’s needs and ensure staff are prepared to provide safe care. Required forms must be updated each school year and can be located on the Rockford Public Schools website under Nursing Services. Forms and supplies can be dropped off to your student's school building during open house.
If your child’s condition has changed since last school year, please notify us as soon as possible. We look forward to partnering with you to keep your child healthy and ready to learn.
Wishing you and your family a great start to the school year,
Kelly Theaker and Jennifer Collins, District Nurses

Reminders
OFFICE REMINDERS
Absences MUST be called into the office 616.863.6374 or emailed to the front office - jbradley@rockfordschools.org
Please leave a message on our general voicemail box if you are calling after hours. Whether you are reporting an absence on our voicemail or email, the State of Michigan requires us to know the following:
Student's name and teacher
Reason for absence - if it is an illness we need to know the symptoms of the illness - vomiting, coughing, fever, cold, diarrhea, lice - whatever the reason may be
Do You Need to Drop Something Off?
If you have an item that needs to get to a student, simply drop it off on our bookcase in our vestibule and provide the student’s name and classroom on a Post-It note. We will make sure it gets where it needs to go.
NO CELLPHONES OR SMART WATCHES
Students with a cellphone will be asked to turn the phone off and not use them during the school day. Please do not text or call your student on their device during the school day. This creates a distraction to the classroom. These devices should be turned off and stored in the student's locker or backpack. We will always help with communication through the office or an email to the teacher if needed.
Students with Apple watches or other wrist devices are asked not use the device to communicate during the school day.
Students who need to contact home because they are ill or wondering about the end of the day pick up should talk to their classroom teacher who will help them navigate next steps of support.
Devices at school are distracting to students during the learning day and we ask that unless your student needs the device to communicate after school that they stay home.
Thank you for your support.
LABEL EVERYTHING
The winter weather is here, and students are dressing in layers, which means our lost and found will be growing. To avoid your student’s clothing from going into the lost and found PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING!!! Label all coats, boots, mittens, hats, etc. Labeling items will ensure they will back it back home!
