Student and Parent Open House (Optional)
Thursday, March 19, 2026 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm
There is an optional 6th Grade Open House for students and parents who would like to see East Rockford Middle School. During the open house, we will have students providing tours. If you have an older sibling that wants to provide the tour, we would love to see them back in the building. We will also host a summer orientation for students in August.

As we prepare for your transition into 6th grade, we need you to provide us with some information. Please follow the steps below:
Step 1: Introduction to 6th Grade
- Review the 6th Grade Brochure with your child. (be sure to click for page 2 on the brochure)
Step 2: Band/Choir/Orchestra Informational Video

Step 3: Music Selection FINAL STEP, after the March 19th Orientation
- Click on the Music Elective Form to select either band, choir, or orchestra.

*PLEASE NOTE Rockford Instrument Fund. Through the generous support of the Rockford Education Foundation, students who qualify for free and reduced lunch and are participating in band or orchestra, can apply for the Rockford Instrument Fund. For more information about applying for a reduced rental fee, see the Rockford Instrument Fund information HERE. These funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis and distributed at the fitting.
Band and Orchestra Instrument Fitting Information
Which instrument should my child play? This fitting process involves letting your child play the various instruments, therefore determining which instrument will allow your child the greatest opportunity for success. Each student will be given hands-on experience with the various instruments used in our programs, with instruction on proper mouth formation, hand position, and posture. Our goal is to select the instrument on which your child can produce the best sound. We believe any child selected by this process has the basic ingredients to become a successful member of our band/orchestra program.
*Instrument fittings will be communicated after you make your music selection.

Please be on the lookout for upcoming information from the Music Department regarding band and orchestra fitting sign-ups. We will be sending a separate communication with all relevant details specific to music participation.
Important Dates
March 19, 2026
- Student and Parent Open House at NRMS from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm.
March 27, 2026
- 6th Grade Music Elective Form Due
August 2026
- SAVE THE DATE - 6th Grade Orientation is on August 18th with a make-up session on August 21st.
- Students will receive their teacher information, lockers, and schedule at orientation.
